Memorial Day Reflections

As a United States Navy veteran and someone that has lost friends in the service today is a day of reflection. Today I remember Navy Intelligence Specialist 2nd Class Amanda Snell.

Amanda and I went to A and Cschool together and she was a kind soul. She got orders to the Pentagon. She was full of life and so young. Amanda was kind to everyone she met. We were thousands of miles apart but still we talked about our lives occasionally. She lives on in the memories of those who loved her.

There are many others that people very close to me have lost. My brother lost a friend in Iraq, a girl I went to high school with lost her cousin, a newer friend lost someone close to her. We carry their memories today and every day.

I am proud to remember the good in those people. Today I read “The Poppy Lady” to A this will become a Memorial Day tradition. The words move me. Today I also ran 2.2 miles to represent those Veterans that take their lives daily. We remember them today too.

I think the favorite quote of the Poppy Lady Moina Belle Michael is something we can all choose to live by “Whatsoever your hands find to do, do it with all your might.”

Her promise “And now the torch and poppy red, We wear in honor of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught. We’ll teach the lesson that ye wrought. In Flanders Field.”
